How to record video: Mobile Phone

Almost any mobile phone can be used to record video clips. Unless you have a high-end video phone, the quality is usually not great so we recommend using a digital stills camera or camcorder where possible.

Shooting your video

  • The method for recording mobile phone video varies by manufacturer. Typically, you would go into standard camera mode, then look for the movie ( ) option.
  • You can shoot either one continuous clip or several shorter clips. However, if you shoot more than one clip you'll need to edit them together into a single clip on your phone or computer.

Transferring to your computer

  • The easiest method is to connect your phone directly to your computer. You can do this using the USB cable supplied with your phone (if available) or via a wireless Bluetooth connection if your computer has a Bluetooth facility. Once connected, simply drag and drop the video files -- which are usually in 3GP format -- to your computer.
  • If you don't have a USB cable or Bluetooth connection, you can send video to your computer by email. Many phones allow you to send email messages directly from your phone. If your phone doesn't have that facility, you may be able to create an MMS message and enter your email address instead of a phone number.
